Assessment of an alternative Pinctada margaritifera spat collector in French Polynesia

چکیده
Plastic waste in the oceans is a growing concern due to its size diversity, ubiquitous nature and impact on both marine organisms ecosystems. While threatened by this plastic litter, aquaculture industries also represent one of major sources. In French Polynesia, black-lip pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera) farming no exception. Wild spat collection has been described as source pollution because numerous particularly fragile brittle shade-mesh collectors used locally often mismanaged when longer usable. Thus, with aim helping reduce pollution, present study focused assessment reusable plate collector potential alternative. We tested, using an situ approach, influence collecting surface position (i.e. horizontal vs vertical), color black orange) density 25 plates 50 plates) Pinctada margaritifera maculata settlement. Our results showed that 50-plates collectors, whatever their position, were more efficient collect kinds than (P < 0.0001). They induced higher number 25-plates device although there was significant difference numbers However, every type presented decreased mean length collected 0.0001) compared collector. Furthermore, positioning greatly improved effect > 0.05). Finally, our indicated that, among all devices most margaritifera. These first findings thus tend suggest these re-usable could be alternative currently collectors.

Pearl oysters Pinctada margaritifera grazing on natural plankton in Ahe atoll lagoon (Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia).
In atoll lagoons of French Polynesia, growth and reproduction of pearl oysters are mainly driven by plankton concentration. However, the actual diet of black-lip pearl oysters Pinctada margaritifera in these lagoons is poorly known. To fill this gap, we used the flow through chamber method to measure clearance rates of P. margaritifera in Ahe atoll lagoon (Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia)...
متن کاملEvaluation of selected substrates for collection of hatchery reared black-lip pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera) spat
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of collector materials and position on Pinctada margaritifera spat attachment. Settlement on polyethylene pipes (54.6%) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than on plastic baskets (25%). Significantly higher (P < 0.05) spat catch was recorded from the collectors which were installed on lower height of settlement tank than upper. The number o...

Pearl culture industry represents one of the dominant business sector of French Polynesia. However, it still entirely relies on unpredictable spat collection success. Our aim was to assess the influence of natural plankton concentration fluctuations on maturation and spawning of the black lip pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera, during a 4 months survey conducted in Ahe atoll lagoon. Plankton c...
